All About Maharashtra Day

Every year on May 1st, Maharashtra Day, also called Maharashtra Diwas, is observed to mark the state's creation in 1960 when it was split off from the former Bombay State. On May 1, 1960, the Bombay State was divided into the linguistic states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, leading to the creation of the state of Maharashtra on this day. Maharashtra Day is observed as a public holiday in the state and is widely observed with great enthusiasm.

History  

The Maratha Empire ruled over a large portion of Maharashtra from the 17th to the 19th century, giving the state a rich and varied history. Following India's 1947 liberation from British colonial rule, the modern states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, as well as portions of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka, were incorporated into the Bombay Presidency. The States Reorganisation Act, which was passed in 1956 in response to the mounting demand for linguistic states in India, made it possible for states to be formed along linguistic lines. The Bombay State was split into the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra as a result of this Act.  On May 1, 1960, Maharashtra was admitted as a separate state.

Shivaji Park in Dadar, Mumbai hosts the Maharashtra Day parade, which features vibrant processions with traditional dancers, floats, and marching bands.
