History and Significance
Jainism is thought to have been founded by Lord Mahavir. On the thirteenth day of the brilliant half of the moon in the month of Chaitra, 599 BC, he was born in Kshatriyakund, Bihar. He was regarded as the final Tirthankar (teaching god who devotes himself to dharma and preaches it to others)
Mahavir was given the name Vardhaman by his parents, King Siddhartha and Queen Trisala when he was born. Despite being a member of a royal family, he was unimpressed with his upbringing. He was always looking for tranquility and spirituality.
Early in his youth, Vardhaman became deeply interested in the fundamental principles of Jainism and practiced meditation. He gave up the throne and his family at the age of 30 in order to pursue spiritual truth. Before achieving "Kevala Jnana," or omniscience, he engaged in painstaking penance and extreme austerity for more than 12 years.
According to records, Mahavira said that one should always abide by the five principles of Ahimsa, Satya, Astaya, Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha in order to live a good life.
