International Telecommunications Day honors the ongoing development of communication, one of the most significant aspects of our daily life. The major objective of World Telecommunications Day (WTD) is to emphasize the value of communication and the global nature of information flow.
Every year, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is observed to promote awareness of the benefits that the usage of the Internet and other ICT may have on society and economies as well as strategies for bridging the digital divide. The first International Telegraph Convention and the founding of the ITU were signed on May 17, which is the anniversary of WTISD.
About
The International Telegraph Union (ITU), a group established in 1865 to encourage then-emerging communication technologies, has close ties to World Telecommunications Day. ITU was there for every significant development in communication, including the creation of the telephone in 1876, the launching of the first satellite in 1957, and finally the development of the Internet in the 1960s.
The International Telecommunications Union, which has now changed its name to International Telecommunications Union, is still the most significant organization in the communications industry and is honored on World Telecommunications Day.
International Telecommunications Day seeks to raise public awareness of the opportunities that technology presents. The Internet and other information and communication technologies are highlighted (ICT). On this day, we examine the various positive effects that ICT has had on economies and society while also exploring new strategies for closing the digital gap.
History
Since May 17th, 1969, World Telecommunications Day has been observed annually. The International Telegraph Union was created on the same day that has been adopted as the official start date. On May 17, 1865, the first International Telegraph Convention was ratified in Paris, and this took place. At the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain, the event was formally established in 1973. Every year, a current subject is chosen, and celebrations are held all around the world to honour World Telecommunications Day.
It was acknowledged that the subject needed to be brought to the public's notice given the growing significance of telecommunications and information technology, particularly the Internet. As a result, the UN General Assembly was asked by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) to proclaim May 17 as World Information Society Day in 2005. This was done in order to draw attention to the significance of these technologies as well as a variety of related economic and social challenges that the summit had discussed.
International Information Society Day will be observed every year on May 17 as decided by the UN General Assembly in March 2006. However, it was decided at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, later that year that both celebrations would be combined as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, also known as WTISD.
Day of World Telecommunications
Since 1969, the 17th of May has been designated as World Telecommunication Day to commemorate the creation of the ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. The Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain, was established in 1973.
Day of the Information Society
The World Summit on the Information Society requested in November 2005 that the UN General Assembly designated May 17 as World Information Society Day in order to draw attention to the significance of ICT and the vast range of concerns identified by WSIS that are connected to the Information Society. International Information Society Day will be observed annually on May 17 thanks to a resolution (A/RES/60/252) that was approved by the General Assembly in March 2006.
