On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi also referred to as the "father of the nation" was born. Because he was an honest man who practised what he taught, he was affectionately called as "Bapu." Gandhi fought for India's independence from the British empire throughout his whole life. His birthday is a significant national holiday in India.
Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) will now be recognised annually as the International Day of Non-Violence according to a resolution adopted by the UN in 2007. The goal is to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness".
