International Day for Biological Diversity
To raise awareness of concerns relating to biodiversity, the United Nations has designated May 22 as The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB). The International Day for Biological Diversity was initially established by the UN General Assembly's Second Committee in late 1993, on December 29 (the day the Convention on Biological Diversity entered into effect). The UN General Assembly designated May 22 as International Day of Biological Diversity (IDB) in December 2000 to mark the approval of the Convention's text by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity on May 22, 1992. Due to the numerous holidays that fall around that time of year, it was challenging for many nations to organize and carry out appropriate celebrations on December 29.
History
Although genetic differences within each species, such as those between different types of crops and livestock breeds, as well as the diversity of ecosystems (lakes, forests, deserts, and agricultural landscapes), which support a wide range of interactions among their members, are also part of biological diversity (humans, plants, animals).
Theme
The solution to many problems relating to sustainable development remains biodiversity. Biodiversity is the cornerstone upon which we may improve, from nature-based solutions to climate, health challenges, food and water security, and sustainable lifestyles. The theme for the 2023 International Day of Biological Diversity is " From agreement to action: Build back biodiversity."
