All About National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day is observed annually on December 22, the birthdate of India's greatest mathematician, Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan. The Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, decided to celebrate his birthday as National Mathematics Day in order to honour him and his contributions to this field.

All About National Mathematics Day

Celebrated annually on December 22, National Mathematics Day honours the memory of renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. His contributions are regarded as instrumental in the fields of number theory, infinite series, mathematical analysis, etc. In honour of his contributions and to acknowledge him as a mathematical legend, Mathematics Day is observed. On National Mathematics Day, we honour Ramanujan's outstanding accomplishments and consider the importance of mathematics in our daily lives. History
In 1887, Ramanujan was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu, into an Iyengar Brahmin family. He was the youngest Fellow of the Royal Society when he was elected to join the London Mathematical Society in 1918. Renowned British mathematicians such as G.H. Hardy, enthralled with Ramanujan's grasp of sophisticated mathematics, acknowledged his contributions. To honour the illustrious Srinivasa Ramanujan, the former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh declared this day to be National Mathematics Day in 2012.

Goal
The primary goal of commemorating this day was to raise awareness of the value of mathematics in society's and humanity's overall development. In addition, it is important to concentrate on the younger generation, as they represent the nation's future and should be inclined positively towards learning mathematics.

Who Was Srinivasa Ramanujan on Maths Day?
In honour of Mathematics Day 2023, it's crucial to learn more about the man this day is named for. In Erode, Tamil Nadu, in 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was born into a Tamil Brahmin family. Despite not having a formal education in mathematics, his contributions offered in-depth analyses to apply novel ideas and concepts to solve challenging mathematical problems. We all love to think of Ramanujan as "the man who knew infinity."

He became a member of Trinity College and was chosen to join the London Mathematical Society. He was chosen to become a fellow of the Royal Society in 1918. In addition, Ramanujan was proposed as the first Indian member of Trinity College, Cambridge. Naturally, December 22nd was designated as National Mathematics Day in his honour and memory.

The Contributions of Ramanujan to Mathematics:

  • He contributed in a variety of ways to mathematical functions and number theory.
  • Divergent series, Riemann series, hypergeometric series, elliptic integrals, and the functional equations of the zeta function were among the topics of his theoretical speculations.
  • His papers appeared in the Indian Mathematical Society Journal in 1911.
  • 1729 is referred to as the Hardy-Ramanujan number.

Importance
The primary goal of the celebration is to increase public awareness of the value of mathematics to human development. We cannot overlook the various efforts made to encourage, inspire, and instill in the nation's younger generation a positive attitude towards acquiring mathematics. On this day, teachers and students of mathematics receive additional training through camps that focus on the creation, production, and distribution of teaching-learning materials (TLM) for mathematics and related fields of study.

What is the celebration of National Mathematics Day?
In India, a number of colleges, universities, schools, and other educational establishments observe National Mathematics Day. India and the International Society of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) had even decided to collaborate in order to promote mathematics education. In addition, a number of actions were made to teach mathematics to the students and disseminate knowledge to learners worldwide.

The oldest science academy is located in Allahabad and is called NASI, or The National Academy of Science India. NASI hosts a workshop on applications of mathematics and Ramanujan to commemorate National Mathematics Day. Prominent lecturers and mathematics specialists from around the country attend the workshop. Srinivasa Ramanujan's contribution to mathematics is discussed by speakers at national and international forums.
