World Wetlands Day 2023

A number of environmentalists gathered in 1971 to reaffirm their love and protection for wetlands, which are the microenvironments of trees and shrubs, and living things found within water bodies and which promote the health of the environment in abundant amounts to not only bodies of water but to environments as a whole. To put emphasis and aid in increasing public understanding of the value of wetlands, a topic is chosen each year. There are many different types of events that nations hold to increase awareness, including talks, seminars, nature hikes, kid's art competitions, sampan races, society clean-up days, broadcast and television discussions, letters to newspapers, the introduction of new wetland regulations, new Ramsar Sites, and new national programs.

Why do we celebrate wetlands day?

Though it wasn't observed until 1997, World Wetlands Day is now observed annually on the second of February. This day honors the impact that wetlands have had on the global economy and on bringing people together for the good of the environment. This day also promotes global knowledge because wetlands are important for both the planet and humanity.

What is meant by wetland day?

Wetlands are habitats where water plays a major role in regulating the climate and the plant and animal life that goes along with it. A broad definition of wetlands encompasses both freshwater and marine and coastal ecosystems, including all freshwater lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas, and tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, coral reefs, as well as all man-made sites like fishponds, rice paddies, reservoirs, and saltpans.

Given the intrinsic worth of this natural ecosystem and its features and services, together with its contributions to sustainable growth and human well-being in the areas of environment, climate, ecology, social and economic development, science, education, culture, recreation, and aesthetics, these lands are essential to both people and nature.
