After considering the Palestine issue during the seventh emergency special session that was resumed on August 19, 1982, the General Assembly, "appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel's acts of aggression," decided to observe June 4 as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.
The General Assembly's adoption of Resolution 51/77 in 1997 was a crucial step towards improving the protection of children impacted by armed conflict. The Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol, among other current initiatives to uphold children's rights, were expanded upon. The resolution also established the responsibilities of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, highlighting the necessity of devoted consideration, advocacy, and concerted efforts to address the vulnerabilities and abuses experienced by children in conflict-related circumstances.
A roadmap for ensuring a better future for everyone, including children, is provided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda acknowledges the significance of putting a stop to all forms of violence against children, and Target 16.2 particularly aims to do so. Additionally, a number of other violence-related aims mainstream the elimination of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Governments and organizations may collaborate to guarantee the protection and well-being of children in conflict-affected regions by coordinating their activities with the 2030 Agenda.
